Seas of Cosmic Filth - I-V MC
A new, iconic band name that promises unexpected excitement, a rather neatly presented cassette with a sleeve and morbid painting that effectively attracts the viewer's attention: at first glance, this is a very fine release from the small label AlphaGoat Records from Essen. But what is actually behind Seas of Cosmic Filth? The musicians stay in the background, revealing nothing of themselves except their obviously pent-up resentment, which is duly expressed in five evenly spaced tracks. Particularly striking here are the seemingly corroded vocal chords of the screamer who strides to action, sounding like a post-apocalyptic zombie or intergalactic alien mutation invasion and effortlessly spewing their drooling, festering filth onto humanity. This is snotty death metal growling, or more to the point, a bulging rage cuddled with grind. It takes some getting used to, but it's also unique. This is contrasted by the instrumentalists who, in stark contrast to the very mushy vocals, unleash one cosmic eruption after another in a very differentiated and structured manner. Across the vast expanses of space, they are absolutely atmospheric and very focused, perhaps comparable with Mesarthim and similar acts, but now and then also quite groovy or even minimally crusty, I would like to think. But this much is certain: under no circumstances are there any bumbling. But this much is certain: under no circumstances are there any bumbling beginners at work here, the entire sound construction seems very well thought out and considered. It's almost as if you're deliberately presented with a choice here: You like it wicked and dirty, then focus on the vocals when listening, or you're all about the atmospheric cosmic coldness, then you should concentrate highly on the instruments. In both cases, the counterpart is somehow inexplicably adapted to your perception. And that is a truly rare art!
